SEHA's Sheikh Khalifa Medical City Sets New Standard in Orthopaedic Surgery with Innovative Microscopic Technique

Doctors at SKMC achieved a significant medical milestone by using a high-precision microscope to successfully remove a benign tumour from a nerve in the arm of a 36-year-old patient

SEHA, a subsidiary of PureHealth, the largest healthcare group in the Middle East, has achieved a significant milestone in orthopaedic surgery at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC). A successful microscopic surgical excision of a benign tumor from the superficial radial nerve sheath, along with neurolysis, was performed on a 36-year-old male patient, marking a pioneering advancement in medical treatment.

The patient had been enduring severe pain and continuous electrical-like sensations in his right forearm for four years, significantly affecting his daily life. Despite consultations with numerous orthopaedics and neurologists, a definitive diagnosis and effective treatment had been unattainable until he was referred to SKMC. Under the guidance of Dr Mohamed Khattab, Consultant in Orthopaedics, Trauma, and Reconstructive Surgery at SKMC, a highly specialised team took on the case.

Upon his arrival at SKMC, the patient underwent immediate and comprehensive diagnostic procedures, including X-ray, MRI, and blood laboratory studies, which led to the identification of a nerve sheath tumour – a condition known for its rarity and the challenges it presents. Dr Khattab highlighted the importance of employing a microscopic technique for the tumour's excision and neurolysis to alleviate the nerve compression.

Led by Dr Khattab, the surgery lasted approximately one hour, showcasing SKMC's proficiency in applying advanced, minimally invasive methods to treat intricate conditions. The tumour was identified as a Glomangioma post-operation, an unusual occurrence in its location, and was entirely removed. Dr Khattab stated, "Employing microscopic surgical techniques for the excision of nerve sheath tumours and neurolysis signifies a major leap forward in orthopaedic surgery. This approach allows us to operate with an unprecedented level of accuracy, minimising tissue damage and promoting a faster, more comfortable recovery process for our patients. At SKMC, our commitment extends beyond the operating room; we are dedicated to pioneering treatments that not only address complex medical conditions but also significantly improve our patients’ overall outcomes and their quality of life."

Dr Muna Al Hammadi, SKMC's Chief Medical Officer, said, "The remarkable success of this procedure is a testament to the skill, dedication, and innovative spirit of our medical team here at SKMC. This case goes beyond merely showcasing our dedication to delivering state-of-the-art medical treatments; it shines a light on our dedication to the holistic well-being of our patients. We're not just treating conditions; we're restoring hope, functionality, and the ability for our patients to lead their lives without the burden of debilitating symptoms. This achievement is a testament to what collaborative expertise and innovative medical practices can accomplish, setting new standards for healthcare excellence.”

The patient was discharged on the same day of the surgery and reported complete subsidence of symptoms at a follow-up visit four days later, marking a significant milestone in his recovery journey and showcasing the advanced surgical capabilities at SKMC.

This case reflects SEHA and PureHealth's excellence in healthcare and innovation, solidifying their leadership in the UAE's healthcare landscape. It underscores their commitment to pushing the boundaries of medicine, enhancing patient outcomes, and supporting the UAE's vision of becoming a global hub for medical excellence.
