PureHealth subsidiary SEHA successfully reattaches patient’s severed thumb with movement returning five weeks after surgery
Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, July 08 2023 – Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA), a PureHealth subsidiary, the largest integrated healthcare platform in the Middle East, has announced the success of a surgical procedure at Tawam Hospital in Abu Dhabi to reattach a severed thumb to a patient’s hand.
The patient had lost the thumb during a work accident, with Tawam Hospital’s plastic and reconstructive surgery team able to reattach it and restore blood circulation as part of a four-hour surgical procedure. High precision during the operation was required, with the blood vessels just 1mm wide. But all were reconnected successfully, with the patient able to start moving their thumb again five weeks later.
The medical team that performed the microsurgery, Dr. Ammar Al-Damen and Dr. Latifa Al-Dhaheri, said that packing the severed thumb in ice for the journey to the hospital, the quick-thinking of the hospital staff, and the cutting-edge technology at their disposal, all contributed to the success of the operation.
